Passivation of stainless steel is a process performed to make a surface passive. This is done by removing exogenous iron or iron compounds from the surface of stainless steel using nitric chemical dissolution. Passivation has the capability to increase the corrosion resistance of stainless surfaces.
The passivation of stainless steel is performed when free iron, rust, iron particles, metal chips or other nonvolatile deposits might adversely affect the metallurgical or sanitary condition or stability of the stainless surface, the mechanical operation of a part, component or system, or contaminate the process fluid.

The process is performed by initially cleaning the surface with solvents or an alkaline solution to remove organic and other metallic residues. Subsequently, the parts are dipped into passivation solutions and the choice for this solution is usually nitric acid. The process is controlled by time, temperature, and concentration.

MIP does passivation for 300 series Stainless Steel.

Stainless passivation specifications in use at MIP are listed below:
        • MIL S 5002
        • QQ P 35C- Passivation Treatments for Corrosion Resistant Steels
We use one 285 gallon tank for our passivation process. MIP is a certified Class Two vendor of the ISO 9002 quality system.
